Franchises that have reoccurring revenue
Recurring revenue is the holy grail of business ownership. It's the difference between waking up every Monday wondering where your next customer is coming from and waking up knowing that a predictable stream of income is already locked in. For franchise investors, understanding this concept isn't just interesting it's the foundation of choosing the right business to buy.
Imagine waking up on any first of the month ( including the slow one's) and knowing for sure you had work to pay the bills.
What Is Recurring Revenue, Really?
Recurring revenue is income that a business can count on repeating at regular intervals — weekly, monthly, or seasonally — without having to re-sell the customer from scratch each time. The customer enrolls in a service, develops a habit, or simply has a problem that never goes away. You solve it. They pay you. It happens again next month.
This is fundamentally different from a transactional business model, where every sale starts at zero. Think of a sandwich shop versus a lawn care company. The sandwich shop needs foot traffic every single day to survive. The lawn care company signed 200 residential contracts in April, and those customers pay automatically every two weeks until someone cancels. Same effort to acquire the customer dramatically different long-term value.
Many business owners in re-occurring revenue businesses think of it as an annuity for your business and it works!
The Franchise Categories That Get This Right
Some of the most quietly profitable franchise categories are built entirely on this model. They're not glamorous. They're not trending on social media. But they generate serious, compounding wealth for their owners.
Pest control is a perfect example. Nobody calls an exterminator once and considers the problem solved forever. Bugs come back. Homeowners know it. That's why pest control franchises routinely sell annual or quarterly service agreements. A customer who signs up in March is likely still paying you in November. The revenue stacks.
Lawn care and landscaping franchises operate on the same logic. Grass doesn't stop growing. Weeds don't take seasons off. Franchises like these lock customers into seasonal maintenance programs that run on autopilot for the operator. Your sales team closes the account in spring, and your crews execute through fall.
Residential and commercial cleaning franchises — particularly those serving office buildings, medical facilities, or property management companies — often operate on long-term contracts. A commercial cleaning client might sign a 12-month agreement. You show up. You do the work. The invoice goes out automatically. These aren't sexy businesses to talk about at a dinner party, but they're extraordinarily stable.
Pool maintenance franchises round out this category beautifully. Pool owners in warm-weather markets essentially need weekly service for eight to ten months a year, sometimes year-round. The customer rarely switches providers if the service is reliable. Acquisition cost is high; churn is low. That's exactly the math you want.
Understanding Churn Rate
If recurring revenue is the engine, churn rate is the leak in the fuel line. Churn refers to the percentage of customers who cancel their service within a given period. A business with 20% annual churn is losing one in five customers every year — meaning you're constantly running just to stay in place.
The best recurring revenue franchises in the home services space typically see very low churn, often in the 10–15% annual range or better. Why? Because the problems they solve are persistent. A homeowner doesn't cancel pest control because they've decided they no longer mind ants in their kitchen. They cancel because they moved, or a competitor dramatically undercut the price. Both are manageable with good operations and solid customer service.
When you're evaluating a franchise opportunity, ask the franchisor directly: What is the average customer lifetime value, and what does annual churn look like in mature territories? Any franchisor worth buying from will have this data.
I'm never one to toot my own horn, but in my business which I've since sold our our churn rate was a low 4%-7% on a customer base that touted over 5000 customers! That's why my business commanded top dollar when it was time to sell. You can do that too.
The Subscription Mindset Applies Everywhere
Here's something most first-time franchise buyers miss: almost any service business can be restructured around a recurring model if you think creatively about it. HVAC maintenance plans. Auto detailing memberships. Tutoring subscriptions. Senior care check-in programs. The recurring revenue framework is less about the industry and more about how the offer is packaged and sold. And more importantly sold consistently.
The franchisors who have figured this out, who have baked in membership models, service agreements, and auto-renewal programs into their systems are the ones building businesses with real enterprise value. When it comes time to sell, a business with 600 active service agreements is worth significantly more than one with the same revenue generated entirely from one-time transactions. Buyers pay a premium for predictability.
Building Something That Actually Lasts
The most enduring franchise businesses aren't built on hype or novelty. They're built on solving everyday problems for everyday people, over and over again. Recurring revenue turns a good year into a great business and a great business into generational wealth.
